AFter school Science CAmp
Science Detectives: 5 different science units that range from 4 to 6 weeks provided for your child at their school.
Class Description: Five Different After School Science Camps will be offered.
Creepy Crawly Critters (6 weeks) - fall will introduce the students to three different phylums of the Animal Kingdom. We will explore the habitats and make-up of Annelids (worms), Arthropods (insects), and Mollusks (snails and squids). The children will learn what animals live in our area. They will also learn the different characteristics of each phylum and “create” their own species. Then they will present their new species to the class. The students will also create a wormery and experience dissection with squid. Science, Art, and Public Speaking will all be included in this class.
Unlocking the Mysteries of the Scientific Method/ Electricity and Magnets (6 weeks) - fall will explore the process of science inquiry. This class will start with learning how to observe an object all the way through to the final conclusion. I will guide the students through each step of the scientific method with specific experiments. The students will then create and conduct their own experiments. We will conclude the Scientific Method camp with presentations on each experiment. This six week camp will help prepare the students to participate in science fairs and science projects at their schools.
States of Matter, Why do they Matter? (six weeks) – winter will teach the students how to identify all three states of matter through hands-on manipulation. The students will discover how to create new substances by adding together different materials. Then students will also learn how to separate materials with magnets and chromatography. Many fun items will be created in the process: clay, lava lamps, funny putty, mystery muck, water bottle rockets, and animal-shaped balloons. Students will leave this camp with a sound grasp of the three States of Matter.
Exploring the Wonders of the Human Body (four weeks) – winter will explore how our body systems function. Experiments will be conducted to analyze heart function and circulation. The students will also test their brain function and how electricity runs through their body. We will explore respiration and filtration and build a lung. And the class will discover how digestion works while exploring the pH of many foods. The students will leave the class with a much better understanding of their body and how it works.
Field Biology and Ecology Exploration (six weeks) – spring will give the students the opportunity to not only learn about their own Biome where they live, but also about other biomes around the world. As a class we will explore the plants and insects here in our area and learn about their adaptations. With this information the students will create their own species and present it to the class. We will round out the class learning about the water cycle, building a terrarium, and exploring solar power.
